Could association meeting attendance soon be digital by default with the click of a mouse? General meetings of associations could indeed soon be held virtually as a matter of course, if a new bill from the upper house of the German parliament has its way.

The background is that the virtual holding of members’ meetings had been exceptionally permitted during the Covid-pandemic. However, with a draft law of the Bundesrat from July 2022, this other type of meeting could soon become part of everyday life in the association world. The federal government has already responded to the proposal and would even like to expand the regulation. Thus, other types of events in the club area should also be enabled virtually.

Should the virtual general meeting become the norm for associations, this would include many advantages. First, members connecting from different locations can participate digitally. This makes the event more inclusive overall, as it is much easier for parents of young children, for example, to participate from home. CO2 can also be saved on the journey. Furthermore, the health of the members will not be endangered in times of Covid.
