How to Enable Translated Captions in Google Meet

Google Meet allows you to view real-time translated captions during a meeting. This is a great tool for collaborating with international teams. Follow these steps to activate them:

Step 1: Turn on Captions

In the bottom control bar of your meeting window, find the CC icon (Captions).

  • Action: Click the CC icon to activate the captioning feature.
  • Once active, the button will turn blue.

Step 2: Access Caption Settings

Once captions are enabled, a small Settings icon (gear) will appear in the top right corner of your screen (or sometimes within the caption bar itself).

  • Action: Click on the Gear icon to open the “Settings” menu.

Step 3: Configure Translation

In the Settings window that appears:

  1. Select Captions (Untertitel) from the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Meeting Language: Ensure the “Language spoken in the meeting” (In der Besprechung gesprochene Sprache) is set correctly (e.g., German).
  3. Choose Mode: Select the option for Translated Captions (Übersetzte Untertitel).
  4. Select Your Language: Under “Translation language” (Ihre gewünschte Sprache), click the dropdown menu and select your preferred language (e.g., English, French, etc.).

Note: Translated captions are only available for certain Google Workspace editions. If you do not see the “Translated Captions” option, it may not be enabled for your organization’s account.
